The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid is a historic site built in the 2nd century BC. It was used for plays and gladiator fights during Roman times. The theatre was later abandoned and buried for centuries. It was rediscovered in the 1980s during construction work. Today, it hosts concerts, festivals, and other cultural events. Visitors can sit on the original stone seats and enjoy the view of the old town. The theatre is located between two hills, creating natural acoustics.

  1. It is the only Hellenistic-style theatre in Macedonia.

  2. Romans later used it for gladiator fights and public executions.

  3. Only the lower part of the original structure remains today.

  4. It has excellent natural acoustics due to its position between two hills.

  5. In summer, it becomes the main stage for the Ohrid Summer Festival.

  6. Famous musicians and opera singers have performed there under the open sky.

  7. You can still see carvings of Dionysus, the god of theatre, on some stones.
